A trip to the Galleries of Justice in Nottingham which will include a mock trial, a tour of the museum (“Crime & Punishment” theme) and in the afternoon, a tour of the “City of Caves” which is 5 minutes walk from the Galleries of Justice.
During the Mock Trial, the children/students will have the chance to re-enact a modern trial in their 18th century courtroom. Children take on a role, which will be agreed in advance). They will learn to evaluate evidence and learn to construct arguments. They will collaborate to reach a verdict and debate the best sentencing options.
As well as being a fantastic educational experience, it is a lot of fun.
The mock trial for ages 7-11yr is “Tylers Trial” which introduces the contemporary youth justice system and help them to understand the consequences of their actions and combat youth issues such as peer pressure through Tyler’s story. This workshop addresses the consequences when Tyler gives in to peer pressure and commits arson.
The mock trial for ages 12-1s is “Scott Green” which focuses on a young man charged with possession of a class A dug with intent to supply. Students must collaborate to determine his guilt and if necessary an appropriate sentence for his crime. This gives an insight into current sentencing and the consequences of offending behaviour.
The tour of the museum will have a “Crime and Punishment” theme. The staff guiding the tour will mainly be in character.
Topics covered will include Victorians, In the Dark, Buildings, Crime & Punishment through time and the WW2 air raid shelter.
The City of Caves is located about 5mins walk from the Galleries of Justice. We will have a tour of the sandstone caves under the streets of Nottingham and find out who used them and why including seeing the medieval tannery.
We will be split into two groups, an age 7-11yr group and an age 12-16yr group for all three activities.
This trip is not suitable for younger children owing to the content of the tour and mock trial.
The cost will be £7.00 per child/student (further reduced price)
One free adult per family has generously been allowed by their education department.
**Additional adults and non-participating younger siblings will need to purchase tickets independently on the day itself.
(Standard prices are around £15 per adults and £11.75 for non-participating children aged 5yr+ joint entry to the Galleries of Justice and City of Caves)**
